Clay’s Theory on Why the Raiders Are Working Out Colin Kaepernick
26 May 2022
CLAY: Buck, you want something to think about over the weekend so you can be apprised of the latest in the world of sports, so if you happen to stroll across some sports fans on the beach on your little getaway?
BUCK: You know, I can impress all the bros while I order a Pilsner. Yeah.
CLAY: That’s right. Standing at the bar, you can lean over to them and you could say, “Hey, did you see that Colin Kaepernick, former NFL quarterback, has worked out for the Raiders and that Las Vegas may be going to sign Colin Kaepernick?”
Now, here’s my conspiracy theory, Buck. The Raiders are just a total mess, right? They’ve had to fire all their top executives for variety of reasons. They had a player who was driving drunk allegedly and killed someone. They’ve had another player who was on video threatening to kill someone. Their head coach got fired for using language that was deemed to be inappropriate and a whole NFL lawsuit.
I think this is an opportunity for Davis, the son of Al Davis, who is the owner of the franchise, to basically get a woke out of jail free card, right? You sign Colin Kaepernick, you are the king woke owner. And even if there’s all these other inappropriate things that are going on inside of your organization, you just throw down the woke insurance card on signing Colin Kaepernick and, boom — nobody in sports media will say a negative word about you. I think that is Mark Davis’ play.
BUCK: I just cannot watch the NBA, the NFL, Major League Baseball. Can’t do it, man, can’t do it. I just wonder. How old is Colin Kaepernick now?
CLAY: He’s still not that old. I think he’s like 35. He’s been out of the league six years. He was not good when he was last in the league. The chances of him coming back and playing at a high level are very low. It will be monster attention.
If I could point to anyone this is gonna be awful for, it would be Derek Carr, the starting quarterback for the Raiders, because now your backup quarterback gets all the attention. Every time you have a bad game, all the chirping in the background is, “Put Colin Kaepernick in!
BUCK: I can understand the political narrative behind all this, the woke narrative. If they do put Kaepernick in and it’s like they might as well have put me in, like he’s fumbling, he’s throwing interceptions, he a total mess, you know what they’re gonna say? “It’s not his fault. They stole six years of him being the best.”
So they’re not even gonna admit that he got fired or wasn’t in the NFL anymore ’cause he wasn’t good. They’re gonna say, “Oh, but he would have been amazing.”
“Oh, we wouldn’t have any covid if we had just listened to Fauci.”
CLAY: I think it undercuts his martyrdom narrative a lot when he’s getting paid to play. So I kind of welcome him back, if only because we can all see how much he actually sucks, in the event that he gets back in the field.
