Elizabeth Warren Grasps for a Scapegoat
18 Apr 2022
CLAY: Thereโs a New York Times editorial up, Buck, from Elizabeth Warren, senator from Massachusetts, that says: Democrats must pass their stalled agenda or brace for big losses in the midterms. The big losses in the midterms are happening no matter what. Hereโs my concern, Buck. That Democrats might recognize that no matter what they pass, theyโre getting shellacked.
But they also may recognize that Republicans are not gonna have enough of a majority in the House or the Senate to be able to overturn what they pass while they have the majority, while they have the Senate, while they have the House, and while they got the White House. And so whatever they pass would be in effect for multi-years because itโs difficult to overturn something.
And so I wonder if theyโre just gonna throw their hands up, Buck, and say, โYou know what? That argument I think is untrue from Elizabeth Warren. I donโt think itโs gonna change whatโs gonna happen in the midterms.โ I think she probably recognizes that. But whatโs gonna change is the power to implement any of these policies, and they might just say, โScrew it. Weโre gonna have a big tax increase. Weโre gonna spend a bunch of your money while we can, โcause otherwise โ starting next year โ we wonโt be able to.โ
BUCK: We should never underestimate the Democratsโ willingness and shamelessness in scapegoating. Theyโre doing a horrible job. We know that. Thatโs obvious. The numbers all show it. Theyโre not doing a good job with the economy, with crime, with the border. And we have the biggest war going onโฆ Now, look, itโs Putinโs fault. Itโs not Bidenโs fault. But we do have all these international institutions in the U.N. and U.S. leadership on the world stage, all these things they talk to us about, and we werenโt able to stop a Russian invasion before it occurred.
So, I think thatโs all true. It didnโt happen under Trump. I think thatโs all noteworthy. But the scapegoating, Clay, that means that theyโll say, โOh, are you having trouble buying gas? Itโs โcause of those greedy corporations. Are you having trouble making ends meet? Itโs because the rich donโt pay their fair share.โ Forget about the fact that it is government policy that drives inflation.
It is inflation that now means that the average American is working an extra month for free, basically. I mean, youโre looking at an 8% reduction in your wages for the year compared toโฆ I know inflationโs usually about 2%, but real inflation โ which is a whole other conversation of what you really need, not just whatโs in the CPI basket โ is higher than 8%.
CLAY: No doubt, and that is my concern now, that Democrats are gonna turn from, โHey, letโs try to find a way to win some elections in the midterms,โ to, โWeโre done for. Letโs pass what we can while we still can.โ
BUCK: It could happen.
CLAY: And that is a challenge. I think that might well happen.
