Rush Looks at History in Light of Castro’s Dictatorship

BUCK: Clay and I, we are just so fascinated by the Cuba situation and what this means, ’cause it ties so much into our domestic political conversations as well about collectivism and central planning and socialism and Bernie and The Squad and all the rest of it. Plus, the future of this island that’s 90 miles from our shore with over 10 million people. Here’s what Rush had to say just a few years ago about the U.S. when it opened its embassy under the Obama administration in Cuba.

RUSH: Here’s a little Cuban history. I don’t know how many people know this. Cuba had slavery from the sixteenth century all the way ’til 1886. Hardly anybody knows this because nobody cares, but the fact is that more than 60% of the Cuban population is descended from slaves. Not that you would ever know it, particularly if you looked at photos of the Cuban parliament.

Do you know the Cuban parliament, for whatever purpose it serves… I mean, it’s a rubber stamp. But do you know that it’s practically lily white? And when’s the last time you saw a lily-white Cuban citizen? But nobody… (whispering) “We’re not supposed to talk about that, ’cause Castro’s a good guy.

“He’s down for the struggle, you know? He’s one of these guys that’s faced the oppression of the United States, and so the American left has solidarity with ’cause they understand that.” Do you know we fought a war. Do you know this? We fought a war to liberate Cuba, which was under the jackbooted thug Spanish dictatorship! You ever heard of the Spanish-American War?

It was also called The War for Cuban Independence. Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, the Battle of San Juan and San Juan Hill, one of the famous victories engaged in by and engineered by Teddy Roosevelt. So we have quite a history with Cuba. Then of course the mob moved in and turned everything into a giant gambling casino.

CLAY: We’ve spent a lot of time, thanks to Rush’s comments there, taking your calls and reacting to the situation on the ground in Cuba. If you are just listening to us now, I always say this, but it’s true: We want you to listen to as much of the show as you can. Go download the podcast.

I bet we’re gonna have — I would like to think, Buck — the smartest and most interesting conversation in media tow about Cuba and the United States relationship with Cuba and the potential responses and larger, as you said, domestic political agenda and how it is involved in Cuba.

A lot of that discussion in the first hour and into the second hour. We’ve been talking about a lot of topics, as we always do.
